This is a very beautiful gilt metal sake cup with dragonflies, kiku & rising sun. All special symbols in japan. The dragonfly is considered a kachimushi in japan, and the room form of kachi is katsu, which also sounds like the owrd for victory. I found this on the net too in japan dragonflies are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness, and they often appear in art and literature, especially haiku. In ancient mythology, japan was known sa akitsushima, which means land of the dragonflies. The love for dragonflies is reflected by the fact that there are traditional names for almost all of the 200 species of dragonflies found in and around japan. Also, in japan, amongst the the great spears of japan is one which is called the tonbogiri, which when translated is called 'the dragon fly cutter'. The spear is an important part of japan's imperial regalia the spear itself was once wielded by the legendary samurai, honda tadakatsu. Its name is derived from the story that the blade is so sharp, a dragonfly once landed on it and was instantly cut in half. The bcak of the cup reads senshou kinen hai (war victory commemoration cup). The condition is mint on top, and excellent on the bottom. There is a glare from the lights on the cup, that's not damage. It measures 3.5 inches in diameter. This was paart of my personal collection that i am now selling. The winning bidder will be amazed at the beauty. It's going to date from around 1905 (russo-japanese war) to 1920s (wwi).
